Mérida, Mexico:
The Institute of Modern Spanish opened in the city of Mérida, the
most important city in the Yucatán Peninsula, in 1995. Mérida
is considered one of the most beautiful and culturally enriched cites in all of Mexico, and it enjoys the famous Yucatán climate of year-round
sunshine. Our balmy weather is perfect for enjoying the 231-mile stretch
of beaches only a 20-minute car or bus ride from the city. Many inhabitants
of Mérida enjoy visiting these beaches -- and the quaint port city
of Progreso -- throughout the year. While many discribe Mérida as cosmopolitan -- and indeed it is cosmopolitan -- Mérida also maintains a small town ambiance with tight friendly groups, strong family values, and low crime rate. For those interested in night life, Merida hosts a variety of options including many salsa dancing clubs. See below for further description of Merida's restaurant possibilities.
Due to Merida's
easy access to the well established port of Progreso, remarkable infrastructure,
and well-established business services the city has been able to remain
separate from the economic difficulties felt in other parts of Mexico.
In recent years there has been a growth in 'maquiladora' industries in
the Yucatán. However, Yucatán is one of few Mexican states
with a State Secretary of Ecology whose responsibility includes ensuring
that industrial growth does not disrupt the natural beauty of the state.
Two highly recommended readings regarding Mérida & the Yucatán:
Former students' descriptive account of
our location in Mexico.
Administrative director's report on Mérida's safety for visitors.

Internet Cafés:
There are several "Internet Cafés" scattered throughout
Mérida--in the Northern residential area conveniently close to
the Institute and the host families, as well as in the downtown area.
Most Internet Cafés charge the equivalent of US$1 to US$3 per hour
for Internet Access and are opened convenient hours. The Institute's office
and host families can provide directions to these Internet Cafes. Reminder: Free Wireless Internet at the Institute for those who bring their laptops.
Prolongacíon Montejo Restaurant Success!
Merida’s local 20’s, 30’s & 40’s crowd is being drawn to the variety of new restaurants/bars opening on Prolongación Montejo. Within the past 10 years the Northern half of Paseo Montejo--the main North-South boulevard through the city--has changed from a residential boulevard to a successful restaurant/night club strip. This three mile long boulevard is known as Prolongación Montejo. The variety found along Prolongación Montejo includes something for everyone—karaoke bars, bingo establishments, bistros that serve fine Italian, Argentina, or international cuisine, taco restaurants with live Mexican music, sophisticated cafés, ice cream shops, vegetarian (100% Natrual pictured above), and U.S. eateries including Bennigan’s, TGI Friday’s, and similar. The majority of these restaurants/bars are opened weekdays for dinner from about 6:00 PM through 3:00 AM and weekends for lunch and dinner from 1:00 PM through 3:00 AM. The busiest time is between 2:00PM and 4:00PM on weekends and 10:00PM and 11:00 PM every night. The biggest attractions for Institute of Modern Spanish students is that these restaurants give them a chance to mingle with the local crowd—especially college students and professionals--, and these new restaurant/bars are in walking distance of many of our host families’ homes.
Continuing North on Prolongación Montejo about 20 minutes will lead you to the quaint beach town of Progreso, while continuing South on this road will lead to the edge of downtown Merida (El Centro). The Southern half of this road has more traditional restaurants that have been in Mérida for many years. These restaurants attract tourist from the hotels in downtown and along this area of Paseo Montejo including the Hyatt, Fiesta Americana (pictured above), Hotel Conquistador, and others.
