The Institute of Modern Spanish organizes two projects to benefit their students:
- Opportunities to be a guest speaker, guest conversation leader, or English grammar or conversation teacher at the Institute of Modern English. See Below!
- Opportunities to be a volunteer live-in nanny/English teacher in exchange for room and board. Click Here!
The Institute of Modern Spanish launches a new project:
the Institute of Modern English!
After 14 years of dedication to teaching Spanish to incoming students, the Institute of Modern Spanish will open its doors to local Merida residents who wish to learn English.

Our project--the Institute of Modern English--will open in January 2010. Due to our magnificent location in the most up-and-coming area of Merida (high-tech hospitals and several universities are close as well as new residential areas), the Institute of Modern English will attract young professionals, doctors, nurses, college professors and other teachers, and college students. The program will be structured similar to the Institute of Modern Spanish classes in that conversation and grammar will be covered in separate classes.
The benefit of this project for Institute of Modern Spanish students is two fold:
- Institute of Modern Spanish students visiting Merida for short periods under six weeks will be able to participate as guest speakers, special guest conversation leaders, and similar activities. With this project Institute of Modern Spanish students will be able to meet local residents of similar age and interests. The Institute of Modern English faculty can provide you with a topic for your conversation, or you can bring one of your own (i.e. information about your area, your profession, or another topic of interest to you). In the case that you bring your own topic, it is important that you bring a short reading text and/or photos.
- Institute of Modern Spanish students staying in Merida for over six weeks can participate in our tuition exchange program. If qualified, the Institute of Modern Spanish student can teach English classes to offset the cost of his/her Spanish immersion program. If students staying longer the six-weeks are unable to participate as teachers, they are still welcomed to participate in the Institute of Modern English as guest speakers and special guest conversation leaders, and will be able to attend special events organized for the Institute of Modern English.

Do you have experience working with children?
Are you interested in helping a local Merida family?
The Situation:
Many local families have their children enrolled in bilingual elementary schools in Merida. These children normally have half their subjects taught in Spanish and half their subjects taught in English. In addition, they are taught English subjects such as grammar, spelling, reading, and writing. Many of these programs are quit demanding. Not only are children assigned daily homework, they also are required to take a sport two to three times per week.
Often parents of a bilingual school student are faced with a dilemma. Their first concern is their child’s homework. Although many parents speak some English, often times the level of English needed to help their child with his/her homework surpasses the parent’s English ability. This leads parents to a second concern. The parents will need to look for outside help either in the form of a in-home tutor or registration in a homework assistance program.
Parents’ dilemma: If their child attends his/her sport activity two to three times per week, daily homework help sessions, and additional English classes for added support—both parents and child feel overwhelmed during the school week and at end the school week are exhausted.
The solution: Find a qualified, native-speaking, live-in nanny who can provide homework support, English lessons, and limited child-care in exchange for a comfortable private room and three meals per day.
You can be part of the solution for a local Merida family!
- Important Notices:
This program is operated as a way to benefit Institute of Modern Spanish students who have experience working with children and who will need financial assistance with a long-term stay in Merida as well as local Merida families.
- Enrollment in Institute of Modern Spanish classes is mandatory.
- Both Institute of Modern Spanish students and families who receive their services agree that no money will be exchanged.
- Application on the part of either the Institute of Modern Spanish or the receiving family does not guarantee acceptance and placement of student. Because acceptance is not guaranteed, your enrollment at the Institute of Modern Spanish should not be dependent on acceptance.
- A screening and placement fee will be charged by the Institute of Modern Spanish to both parties after acceptance. Fee for both parties is calculated on a per week and per child basis.
